DAY TWO -- De-cluttering your sanctuary -- posted by Katherine

As a Virgo, I cannot help but be diligently (read: obsessively) clean and organized. Or at least I like to excuse my deep love for rubber gloves and Clorox wipes as an uncontrollable astrological force that is exerted upon me.

As one who organizes, everything has its place in my house. You may then think that staying organized would be as effortless as women’s glossy mags make it seem. Quite the contrary. Entering every new phone number or address change into my Palm Pilot, writing down every receipt in my checkbook, paying and filing every bill, finding a spot for even the smallest of purchases demands a lot of time, inevitably creating a backlog on my desk. As the month progresses, the pile grows higher and higher, until it stands like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, waiting to topple over with the slightest draft that’s created if I close my door too quickly.

My desk sits to the left of my bed, my designated sanctuary. I try to relax on my queen-sized haven, but my eyes are drawn to the mess on my desk. Thinking of the bills to pay, the receipts to file, the papers to sort, I become anxious and any zen energy is lost. So yesterday’s task of de-cluttering my sanctuary was just the push I needed to tackle the monolith of papers towering over me.

I hopped off my bed, sat down at my desk, and began rapidly sorting them into piles: To Pay, To File, To Shred, To Recycle, To Deal With Later. No wait – that wasn’t de-cluttering, that postponing. Dealing with them later was just a euphemism for putting them right back on my desk to start the cycle all over again.

So I tackled that pile first and I was amazed with the things I had been meaning to deal with for such a long time: magazine articles, recipes, an application to renew my passport, lists of things to do that were six-months old. Looking through them, I wasn’t even sure why I kept some things. Did I really want to learn how to make my own flower arrangement? Or more importantly, would I ever really have time to do it?

I winnowed down the colossal stack to a manageable 5 things To File, 8 things To Recycle, and countless items To Throw Away. I filed, recycle and discarded with a cathartic energy of really accomplishing something. When the last item was put away, I sat on back on my bed and admired my desk. It was flat, clean and clutter-free. I could finally just sit on my bed, and not think about all the to-dos I had accumulating next to me. And I could stop worrying about whether pile of papers would come crashing down upon me in the middle of the night. I closed my eyes and felt a real peace of mind that I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

I'm posting this again for Day Two blog in case anyone missed it in the last section. If anybody is like me, all this creating and relaxing in the same spot every day can be a challenge in and of itself. As we prepare our home for selling, I have to find different spots to do these things. The first night I took a wonderful bath; last night I decluttered our boys' room. My husband surprised me by making bunk beds out of their two twins, so there is a lot more space. We got to bed late, but the feeling of accomplishment was great, even though it wasn't my sanctuary spot. Our job today is to RELAX in our sanctuary. Tonight, my relaxation place will be in front of the t.v. Tisk tisk, you say! But we've worked hard this week and deserve some downtime that does not require a lot of brain power. The point I'm getting at here is that all these challenges are somewhat open to interpretation. If you're struggling to find that perfect spot, perhaps your spot can morph with your needs for that evening. Enjoy & good luck!

Decluttering what a word for a person who has saved immense amounts of papers, and books. I do go back and reread, because this is my way of decompressing...I write poetry. What I started doing was to place these writings into folders, and I have a special bookcase I bought it 3 months ago and it sits half full. Now I have a place to put these writings. I was just stacking things miles high, and wondering where next to put things. I keep working on the suggestions posted, and in the near future I will see the light at the end of the road! My sanctuary, strangely, isn't really much of what someone would consider a true sanctuary...it's not even a place. More of a state of mind that only happens when I play ultimate housewife - cooking big meals, cleaning every surface, corner and edge of my house and ironing my fiance's boxers. Is that weird? Just doing weird neurotic rituals, re-organizing the most insignificant things (read: cleaning supplies below the kitchen sink) and ultimately, unnecessarily tiring myself out hours before bedtime. But, it's so relaxing to be so caught up in something that feels unusually natural.
...and I write poetry too.

I'm starting a couple of days late and yesterday's decluttering is something I sure wish I'd seen!

My comment is for Katherine. What you posted was so helpful to me that I felt immediately less cheated and full of "neatnikness" plans.

I'm a Virgo, too. Go figure. I'm disabled so I almost never get out. And my filing system has been of the "tossed salad" variety. It amazes me to realize that even if all I dealt with was papers, I'd be well on my way to tidyness.

Instead of folders, I'll have to use grocery or maybe even trash bags to categorize all my papers, but that will be a start! Seven church volunteers were here for 4-1/2 hours Saturday, some doing backed up laundry or dishes, and the rest trying to achieve neatness out of utter chaos. Now I have 6 or 8 trash bags full of largely uncategor-ized papers to wade through, but I'm not complaining.

Well, I'm on week 2, day 3, and behind everyone else...I didn't find out about the challenge until everyone else was on week 5. No matter, I just started from the beginning and am slowly working my way through.

I am in a one room apartment in Kodiak, Alaska, complete with cat. My sanctuary space has become a bean-bag pillow next to my bed, with a regular pillow behind my back for support and general comfort. I very much enjoyed peacefully observing the apartment from my little warm nook, cat curled up on my lap. I generally hate being alone, but this made me realize for at least a few moments that being alone might not be that bad.

Decluttering my space is easier said than done. Besides this challenge, I'm already undergoing my own challenge, decluttering my whole apartment, which is all visible from my sanctuary spot. But Katherine has a point. Decluttering the space (in my case a coffee table) immediately in front of my sanctuary space might make me feel that much more relaxed. I'll have to give it a try.
