DAY ONE:
Living with two roommates, in what could possibly be the world's smallest apartment, didn't leave too many options for designating my sanctuary. There was my teeny tiny bathroom, but the possibility of Roommates 1 and 2 bursting in at any time would be inevitable. With an obvious lack of a walk-in closet, that left my room as the only real place -- I would have to get creative. I chose my favorite side of the room -- the one with the most sunlight, a nightstand and shag rug. I spread out my three throw pillows to create a cozy little corner to call my own. I locked my laptop in its case, turned off my cell phone (gasp!) and stashed the piles of books and magazines in the living room.
I was ready for my first 10 minutes of relaxation and solitude.
Minute 1: Roommate 1 barges in and wants to borrow new sweater.
Minute 2: Kick Roommate 1 out and post sign on door that says I need uninterrupted concentration.
Minute 3-4: Start over.
As I sit in my sanctuary for 10 minutes, I try to ignore the "to-do list" in my head. I feel the soft breeze of my ceiling fan and try to block out the sounds of the city drifting in through my closed window. I close my eyes and tell myself that I really will be committed to becoming more mindful and gaining balance in my life. My sanctuary is the first step.

I can't believe how creative people have been in choosing their sanctuaries. I never thought of using my bathtub, but that is where I've been going lately to unwind -- even though I'm a tried and true bath-hater. I bought some Epsom salts, add a few drops of Burts Bees apricot baby oil and I'd better not be disturbed for at least 1/2 an hour.
I asked this on the Mind-Body Community Challenge message board (http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhmindbody) earlier -- can a shower be a sanctuary? While it's true a pillow might not work, it's possible to lock the door, play a CD (guess it would have to be kind of loud LOL), get some great aromatherapy soaps and bath gels, soft towels .... and think of the shower as a rain bath. Not sure about a glass of wine, though. Hmmmmmmm... maybe in a sports-drink bottle? :)
Sports drinks would be great, too! Now, our new challenge is to RELAX in our sanctuary. If anybody is like me, all this creating and relaxing in the same spot every day can be a challenge in and of itself. As we prepare our home for selling, I have to find different spots to do these things. The first night I took my wonderful bath; the second night (last night) I decluttered our boys' room. My husband surprised me by making bunk beds out of their two twins, so there is a lot more space. We got to bed late, but the feeling of accomplishment was great, even though it wasn't my sanctuary spot. Tonight, my relaxation place will be in front of the t.v. Tisk tisk, you say! But we've worked hard this week and deserve some downtime that does not require a lot of brain power. The point I'm getting at here is that all these challenges are somewhat open to interpretation. If you're struggling to find that perfect spot, perhaps your spot can morph with your needs for that evening. Enjoy & good luck! ~Twilight
I don't really have a "sanctuary" per-se, but I do find time to relax. The beautiful area I live in, is my true sanctuary. Mainly the beach, but there are other areas that I find my peace.

To Cindy about the shower. I have the best showerhead in the world. It the WaterPik Cascadia-Futuristic Design. On the Downpour setting it feels like your in a rain shower. It's the most wonderful feeling in the world. They have a handheld and a wall mounted one. I have the wall mounted one. I just stand under it and left the water rain down on me.
